about

I was a young man when I first encountered Gurdjieff and his music. Back then I would have called myself a seeker and felt that this was a man who understood the connections between East and West, soul and body, intellect and impression. I I still feel that way about Gurdjieff. So what is this little project? Well, it is not an attempt to play his music, as that has been done too beautifully by Thomas de Hartmann for me to tempt the task.

Actually I had no plans to do this, but over a week I had dreams of Gurdjieff, which meant that on some level I had to either re-read his work or find a new connection with him. This is how the recording come into being, as I was dreaming of Gurdjieff I let that impression come to me and I simply played.

It was the end of my academic term. I had time for two sessions on the piano in my office. I was only in an office, so there were a few noises from outside. Occasionally I had to stop a phrase and start again, occasionally I stopped altogether. The first session went quite well and I had packed up for a meeting in university land. That was the thing, I had 20 minutes left and the muse came, so I used a small portable recorder, and I got close to Gurdjieff on some level, or at least that is my delusion.

Have a listen and see if you can hear the quirks of this day, and see what piece is made in which way. I was going to re-record, but this project is to me about my finding an impression of a hugely inspiring man and sharing his ability to manifest introspection through a practice of stillness. I do not think Gurdjieff would have re-recorded. Would you?
